Reinhard Döhl | Prolegomena zu einem Stil. Zur semiotischen Malerei Luciano Lattanzis & Werner Schreibs.

(Ludwig Wittgenstein)

Moles).

Reinhard Döhl | Prolegomena on a Style / On the semiotic art of Luciano Lattanzi and Werner Schreib

Everything that we see could be different. Everything that we can describe at all could be different. There is no order of things a priori. (Ludwig Wittgenstein)

In a first approach we would describe Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib as methodic artists, and as their programme the picture which develops out of itself. This means that, during the course of his work, the artist has no preplanned result in view, towards which he works; that his paintings therefore have no preconceived or preconceivable content; that they are not analytical, and therefore not interpretations of the world. Rather, they develop step by step, from decision to decision, controllable only in that section of the painting which happens to be in process. And this means at the same time that the result can appear surprising not only to the viewer, but also to the artist.

By doing this methodically, Luciano Lattanzi and Werner Schreib are using a style which we call digital style, by means of which an aesthetic world is built up in an infinite number of stages (=alternatives) out of a repertory which is exactly calculated and calculable. The repertory of Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib reads: vertical, horizontal, circular, zigzag wavy, cross-shaped and spiral. And this repertory could be differentiated still more finely if we interpret it as a manipulation of straight and bent lines. Such a repertory contains the elements of possible aesthetic worlds in an unordered state. Each process of ordering, as a combination of simple elements with limited variation, guided by the imagination, the eye, the hand of the artist, aims at a new aesthetic world, a new aesthetic message. Luciano Lattanzi's and Werner Schreib's pictures show this in the juxtaposition of their products, despite different results, as well as the immeasurability of of the fields of possibilities (A.A.Moles), the path from the single sign to the sign-structure to the super-sign.

In this connection we would speak of the work of Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib also as possible patterns or models, whereby these patterns or models can be characterized as variation, addition, multiplication, adjunction and integration of a given repertory. Historically one can place such painting, such an apprehension of art within a process of development which has its roots in the Romantic era (theoretically for example in the Fragments of people such as Schlegel and Novalis) and its fathers in the art revolution around the turn of the century (in Futurism for instance - Klee, Hölzel; and then Wols and Pollock, among others): a development which led to the primacy of the means, to painting as a consciously manual, mechanical process, to the reduction of painting to the variation on a model. Within this line of development Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib have their precisely definable place, for they have taken the tendency of reduction to the variation on a model one step further, by reducing the repertory of the model to the most simple signs and their manipulation.

Under this aspect we would consider Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib also as progressive artists, and their works as milestones on the way from an analytic to a synthetic art, as aesthetic demonstrations (and objects of demonstration) of a transition from an analytic to a synthetic world (A.A.Moles).

Finally, we would call Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib intellectual artists, with this specific qualification: that their art, far removed from the deadly earnestness of many of their colleagues, is basically aesthetic play, set in motion by, and under the constant control of, intellect and imagination, which keep on inventing new games of the pen or the brush, and their meaning.

What the work of these two artists shows are the methodically achieved results of an intellectual game, which owe their existence no longer to the impulses of an external world, but rather to the method, the rules and aesthetic laws of the game. And this work shows moreover, that art is a discriminating process; and in accordance with the objects of this art, its contemplation should also be a discriminating process. A saying has it that art is an object for intellectual consumption - and play, we would add. The works of Luciano Lattanzi & Werner Schreib are such objects.
